Roblox Rolls Out AI-Powered Real-Time Chat Rephraser for Inappropriate Language
Roblox has launched a new AI feature that rephrases inappropriate language in real time, replacing banned words and phrases with more appropriate alternatives instead of displaying disruptive hash marks (####). The update aims to maintain smoother conversations while enforcing the platform's community standards. According to the company, the tool is initially focused on profanity and is available only to age-verified users chatting within similar age groups.
The online gaming platform has long used AI filters to detect and block language that violates its policies. Previously, censored content appeared as a series of hash signs, which Roblox's Chief Safety Officer Rajiv Bhatia acknowledged can make chats difficult to follow. In a company blog post, Bhatia explained that the new rephrasing system addresses this issue by substituting offending terms while preserving the original intent of the message as much as possible.
For example, a message containing "Hurry TF up" would be automatically changed to "Hurry up!" All participants in the chat see a notification indicating the message has been rephrased, and the original sender can view exactly what language was edited. Importantly, repeated violations still result in penalties under Roblox's community rules. "As these systems scale, they create a flywheel for civility, where real-time feedback helps users learn and adopt our Community Standards," Bhatia said.
The rephrasing feature has been rolled out to chats between age-checked users in similar age brackets and supports all languages covered by Roblox's existing translation tools. The company introduced mandatory age verification in January following reports of adults using the platform to interact inappropriately with children. Users under 13 are restricted from using in-game chat outside of specific experiences, while older users can only communicate with peers in comparable age groups.
Safety and Legal Context
The timing of the AI rephrasing tool comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Roblox's safety practices. Despite the age verification system, the company continues to face legal challenges. In February, Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit alleging Roblox's platform makes children "easy prey for pedophiles." Louisiana's Attorney General also recently sued the company, claiming it "created a public park and filled it with sex predators that are preying on… children."
Roblox positions the new feature as part of broader efforts to improve user experience and promote positive interactions without fully disrupting gameplay flow. The AI system is designed to provide immediate, contextual feedback rather than blunt censorship.
